This place came about ten years ago, when a few hobby matchmakers decided to meet, exchange photos, and set up dates for their acquaintances. Ten years later, the Shanghai matchmaking corner has its own name, and it is THE main event at this park on the weekends. During our recent trip to Shanghai, Bill and I decided to pay a visit and see for ourselves.
We figured it would be an interesting and unusual story to share with all of you; plus, I had a picture of Sarah and a picture of Kaitlin tucked into my wallet. Finding the place is easy.

Shanghai matchmaking event should not have age restrictions By Du Qiongfang Source: Being a married woman with a 2-year-old daughter, it has been a long time since I last paid attention to any blind-date or socializing mixers. But the latest news reports about this year’s big matchmaking event caught my attention. According to Shanghai Morning Post, the age limit of participants will be lowered from 45 to 40 years old, which I think is unreasonable.
Considering the growing trend of late marriages in Shanghai, age limitations should be lifted instead of tightened. I don’t know the reason why the organizers have lowered the age limit. Maybe it is because of the low success rate of participants aged between 40 and 45 attempting to tie their knots through this event. According to big data from previous Shanghai love and marriage fairs, nearly , single men and women have participated in the matchmaking event since it was first launched in However, only around 16, couples actually went on dates after they met at the event – and only 5, of those couples got married.
Even so, people older than 40 should not be deprived of the right to meet potential partners.

Print Email At weekends near the No 5 gate at the People’s Park in the heart of Shanghai visitors can see hundreds, sometimes thousands, of older parents and pensioners gather. They are there to display their unmarried children’s personal information in an effort to find them the perfect partner. The site is well known in the city as “Matchmaking Corner” and pieces of paper listing the ages, education and jobs of prospective husbands and wives hang from the trees like laundry from a line.
All is not well, however, at Matchmaking Corner. Huangpu district authorities have cracked down on matchmaking agencies operating in the area. Parents have complained of paying hundreds of yuan for help to find a partner for their children only for the agencies to disappear with their cash. Other agents have hired attractive men to go on dates with marriage candidates, posing as prospective partners to justify the agencies’ fees, according to Wenhui Daily newspaper.
This week the authorities posted a notice on the park gate banning people from setting up booths to offer commercial matchmaking services, Shanghai Television reported. Its popularity reflects the growing number of so-called leftover young men and women in Shanghai. Many people, particularly older generations, deem men and women who have not married by their late 20s as left on the shelf. This social attitude is reflected at Matchmaking Corner as the people seeking a Mr or Mrs Right are not the young people themselves, but their parents.
It is not easy to distinguish matchmaking agents as many are elderly and pose as parents, or pretend to be staff from non-governmental groups. Also, many of the fraud cases only involve small amounts of money, which do not warrant the time and expense of a full investigation by the police. The park itself does not have the staff or resources to police the matchmakers, as they are also busy dealing with the usual surge of other visitors at the weekend.

Dec 2, Trigger-king Love everything about this game, except for one detail. I genuinely enjoy competitive play, and this game is really enjoyable. I do not mind playing with people who are still learning in classic mode, it is actually fun to watch people get better over the course of a match. What bothers me is players who have really low credit scores due to going AFK. Now I occasionally play at work, and every so often I go afk for a minute or so.
It happens and in classic mode as long as an explanation is given no big deal. That being said, my credit score has never gone below 90, being perfect. I think it would really improve the community if people with lower than 80 credit scores could not play classic or ranked. Currently it is 60 and I feel that it should cut off higher. If you have lower than 80 as a credit score you have been reported quite a few times for negative habits that have impacted other players matches.
