Crazy for First Grade: Beginning of the Year Math Stations in First Grade

I was going to tell you about getting ready this morning and discovering that my one pair of jeans that fit perfectly were soaking wet damp. Then, I was going to tell you guys about my marvelous lunch with my teammates at Olive Garden today. The funny thing is I even picked at my teammates and told them I was taking notes because I was out of funny stories.

Three days locked in a house will do that to a girl. So, I had this entire blog planned out and the thunder started. Rain doesn’t bother me at all, but thunder and lightning means tornadoes in my world.

This page was created to help you get Daily 5 up and running in your classroom. I have read The Daily 5 and The CAFE Book by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. The following ideas and materials are what I have taken from these books and made work in our first grade classroom.

Similar to math tubs, the math partner games I use are two-player games that reinforce a variety of math skills, including problem solving and logical thinking. The games are open-ended and easily differentiated and individualized. Are math partner games the same as math centers? It depends on your definition. Typically in my classroom, partner game time is separate from center time because centers are independent activities while math games are multi-player and encourage discussion and collaborative problem solving.

However, if you have students complete math centers cooperatively, then math partner games would be a perfect fit!

Saturday, 7 July Introduction to Guided Math I know I’m leaving on vacation today, but I started writing this post last night and just had to get it out today! I am so excited about guided math!! When you live in the great white north, you have to like winter even just a little bit. So, in the spirit of one my favorite seasons, I created math center activities for kindergarten and first grade. This bundle is jam packed with 12 hands-on winter-themed activities for your kiddos. Play Doh mats are one of my favorite hands-on activities for introducing basic number concepts. The trick is to make the doh using either alum or cream of tartar and the recipes that have you cook the ingratiates are the best.
