Dr Neil Cunningham, the senior doctor who coordinated St Vincent’s response to the event, said one “extremely distressed” person who had not been hit by the car was brought in by ambulance with chest pains and may be suffering from a heart attack. Another person was “very much in psychological shock” after witnessing the crime and had been admitted for treatment. Dr Cunningham said St Vincent’s received another five patients with multiple injuries. All were clearly in pain and conscious when they arrived. Some had blood on them. About 60 staff were rallied in the emergency department to care for the patients who are all stable tonight. Dr Cunningham said the health system appeared to work well today, and that staff would have to debrief to look after their own health and to learn from the experience. We had an environment that was respectful and understanding of the fact that the people coming through the door had been through a very, very distressing event,” he said.

Is there a convincing philosophical rebuttal to solipsism – the theory that the self is all that you can know to exist? Or are you all figments of my imagination? Norris McWhirter, Dublin, Ireland That depends upon how easily you can be convinced but many people have argued that God is a perfect being and therefore as lying is an imperfection is no deceiver. If this is true then the objects presented to us through our senses must represent something which is also true i.

About Sydney Contemporary Starkwhite will present a group show at Sydney Contemporary, from September, featuring the work of pioneer experimental filmmaker and kinetic artist Len Lye, along with works by contemporary practitioners Rebecca Baumann, Seung Yul Oh and Michael Zavros. New Zealand born artist Len Lye is recognised internationally as a pioneer in the field of experimental film and kinetic art. Our presentation will focus on his kinetic work with two key sculptures – Rotating Harmonic and Roundhead From one simple steel rod, Lye coxes the fundamental principles of harmonic motions that underlie his work.
Rebecca Baumann explores the relationship between colour, light and time in her work, notably in her ongoing series of automated colour fields. The ACFs consist of grids of split-panel flip clocks, each with the number cards replaced with cards of solid colour. The result is a vast and affecting and constantly changing field of colour. Like changing numbers on a clock, the cards flip on each clock on the minute on the right hand side and on the hour on the left hand side — revealing the endless combinations of the palette.
Yet while Baumann draws from an understanding of the art historical role of colour, her focus remains a study of how colour elicits emotions. We will present her latest variation, which is also her largest to date. Automated Colour Field Variation 8 measures x x 90 mm, produced as an edition of three.

How often do strikes achieve something? Best and most effective example is found in a play called Lysistrata, I believe. It is true that strikes often do not achieve the objective set for them, or only partially. The General Strike of likewise ended in disarray. So are they, in fact, a waste of time? Firstly, they have a kind of deterrent value. As a steward or convenor, I was sometimes conscious of having very little real power.
I never called or even threatened a strike, but in a very intangible way, I often felt that I was playing a kind of poker game with no real cards, but a brave face and an unconscious perception on the part of the employers that I somehow had a kind of nuclear option to deploy.
